MIT Nepal
Are you someone creative, detail-oriented, and passionate about designing spaces that are both functional and aesthetic?
Do you have a keen interest in art, design, construction, and problem-solving?
If the answer is yes, you definitely should consider studying Architecture.
The Bachelor of Architecture course is a Bachelor’s program that focuses on designing, planning, and creating buildings and spaces by combining creativity, technical skills, and practical knowledge.
Architecture focuses on the structural as well as the artistic aspects of construction.
In Nepal, Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) is a 5-year program offered by Tribhuwan University (TU), Kathmandu University (KU), Pokhara University (PoU), and Purbanchal University (PU).
To be admitted to study Architecture, you have to pass the entrance examination conducted by the respective university.
Students aspiring to study architecture have to take the same entrance examination as those aspiring to study engineering.
You will have to meet the following requirements to be able to appear in the entrance examination:
Here’s a brief overview of the admission process:
After completing these steps, you will now be able to choose and decide where you want to study.
Based on how well you score in the entrance exam, you may be offered scholarships as well.
The engineering entrance examinations that are conducted in Nepal have to be some of the most competitive and tough entrance examinations.
It requires rigorous preparation and dedication.
Here’s a guide to help you prepare for this journey:
1. Join an entrance preparation institute
It is highly advised that you join an entrance preparation institute.
Entrance Preparation institutes have experienced instructors and conduct classes solely focused on preparing for the entrance examination.
They also provide you with resources such as books, notes, etc, and conduct mock tests to keep you up to date.
2. Understand the exam format.
The syllabus focuses on five subjects:
A detailed overview of the syllabus:
Subjects | Topics Covered |
Mathematics | Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus, Vectors and 3D Geometry, Probability and Statistics, Matrices and Determinants |
Physics | Mechanics, Heat and Thermodynamics, Oscillation and waves, Electricity and Magnetism, Optics, Modern Physics, Units and Measurements |
Chemistry | Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, General Chemistry |
English | Grammar, Vocabulary, Sentence Completion, Comprehension, Writing Skills |
Aptitude and reasoning | Analytical Reasoning, Spatial, General Awareness, and Creativity tests |
3. Focus on core concepts.
As a student preparing for the entrance exam, you should focus on understanding the fundamental and core concepts.
Unlike school exams, which are often focused on memorization and rote learning, entrance examinations are designed to evaluate a deeper understanding and application of knowledge.
Build a strong foundation in physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
4. Create a study timetable.
The entrance preparation for Architecture requires determination and consistency, more than anything.
Make a study plan to study at least 3-4 hours every day, allocate an adequate number of days for each subject, and also dedicate days solely for revision and testing your knowledge.
Remember, consistency is the key to cracking the entrance examination.
5. Test and Revise
Testing what you’ve studied is just as important as studying itself. Solve practice questions and take mock tests.
You’ll get a better overview of your progress, things you need to focus more on, and your strengths as well.
By participating in mock tests, you will also be familiarized with the question pattern, the pressure, time management, and more.
6. Manage your time better.
Time management, whether it be while preparing for the exam or during the exam, is extremely important.
During the preparation, recognize your strengths and weaknesses, and manage your time accordingly.
During the exam, solve the easier questions first. If you get stuck on a certain question, return to it once you’ve completed the others.
7. Practice Drawing and Creativity
Unlike engineering courses, Architecture requires artistic and design ability.
For KU and some private colleges, drawing tests are part of the selection process.
Practice freehand sketches, perspective drawing, and visualizing 2D and 3D objects.
8. Use the right resources.
The resources you use to prepare can make or break your performance in the exam.
Use NEB textbooks for strong basics, and well-reputed IOE entrance preparation guides available in the market.
9. Take Breaks
Taking breaks and taking care of your health, physical as well as mental, is just as important.
Giving yourself well-deserved breaks helps you regain focus and concentrate better as compared to when studying with no breaks in between.
Some things you should know before committing to studying architecture are:
If you are cut out for these hardships, go for the Architecture course.
However, if you are not, it’s not the end of the world.
There are so many other programs you can pursue to build a successful career.
For example, students often explore fields like Information Technology, Business Administration, or Engineering, depending on their interests.
These courses also provide strong career opportunities and can be excellent alternatives for students who decide Architecture isn’t the right fit.
